My trip to Kampala started off very well. The business set up with the women is a huge success in that we have had more women sign up and for the first time men have joined the scheme!!!!!.
The women make a weekly saving of 1000, each which is put onto a savings account while the men who are producing BBQ wire meshing will each be saving ugs.5000. We now have 6 men on the scheme. On Sunday the 11th we lost one of the babies Joseph Lokopet. He fell ill on Saturday night.(Was throwing up) Baby was taken to a nearby clinic on Sunday morning, given two “injections”, 3 hours later he was dead!!!! I had spent the Saturday in Kisenyi with mother and baby. A funeral was arranged which took place in Karamoja (8 hours drive) on the Monday. There were a few challenges like trying to hire a van, which would transport the parents, friends and body to karamoja. Due to the bad roads, not many car hires where willing to take the risk and also the fact that Karamoja is deemed to be unsafe. Anyhow we managed to find a man of God who kindly accepted to “take the risk” at a good price.
Baby Joseph was laid to rest on Monday the 12th at 3.00pm.

I spent 3 days in Karamoja making enquiries on water and land projects. Had meetings with World food Programme, UNCIEF, District officials and the Karamojong elders. I have been offered land in the southern part of Karamoja Irriri, which is known as the green belt. The plan is to build a school/Social centre and adult learning centre. (God Willing) It also needs to be a sustainable project so I believe that we will need to set up some farming ventures both on a small and large scale depending on several factors.

Over 800 attended the party, which was held in Kisenyi Kampala. Residents of West Sussex in the United Kingdom donated the clothes/shoes. A cake sale by the employees of Civil Aviation authority helped raise funds for the party. MK Airlines together with Euro Cargo, Avia partner and Ice Mark Africa transported and delivered the clothe/shoes from the United Kingdom to Uganda free of charge.

In line with the Billion Tree Campaign, a worldwide initiative facilitated by the United Nations environment Programme, the Karamojong women were encouraged to enter the tree planting pledge. 17 ex street children joined them. This for them was also a way of giving back to society. The tree planting was partly sponsored by National Water and Sewerage Corporation. |
